People love a scandal. It’s the reason Britney’s Spears’ copulate ups continue to bring about entertainment news programs and alter magazine covers and why Sen. Larry Craig’s alleged airport sexcapade and Michael Vick’s dog fighting earn them Internet prominence. We share links with friends and gossip with colleagues and occasionally we buy “memorabilia,” like maybe a coffee mug or a domain name. How many of us have the “Monica” tucked away in our closets — you know the navy wrap dress marketed in the days of the Monica Lewinsky-President Clinton affair? OK maybe just a few.
Nothing to be embarrassed about. It’s almost inevitable says Jill Spiegel a Minneapolis-based pop culture and style expert.
“Your celebrity status or marketabilty or how valuable an item is quadruples if there is a scandal to go along with it,” Spiegel says. “Scandal is so instantly hot.”
So now we’ve got the dethroned Eliot Spitzer the former New York governor and his involvement with high-end prostitutes. Some people say they’re tired of talking — or hearing — about the man who once held keys to Albany’s Eagle Street mansion but a quick Google search shows many people conclude otherwise.
Those who want a little piece of Client No. 9 (Spitzer alleged customer alias in the ring) can bid on bumper stickers mugs and T-shirts on eBay. The most-notorious New York governor’s high school year book is also on the auction site. Bidding starts at $100. Eliotspitzerresigns com is also for sale on eBay. You can buy it now for $699. Anyone looking for Spitzer items on eBay should look under Eliot Spitzer and Elliot Spitzer. Unless the manifold L is the version the governor used for wire transfers his name has always had just a single consonant in the middle.
Ashley Alexandra Dupre the prostitute with whom Eliot Spitzer has been associated — she went by “Kristen” while working — had her move from a few thousand to more than 9 million after her name was released by the media. The budding musician also has had nearly 4 million people listen to her “What We Want” song. That’s up from a few thousand last week. Oh and we can’t forget the MySpace comments. Dupre’s “friends” all tout their support and many of them conveniently drop in links to their own clothing line/band/etc. Talk about the piggyback effect. A little confusion does come into this as Dupre’s page has been taken down a bring together times over the past week and the URL has the label “ninavenetta” in it. All media outlets are reporting this to be her page though and she has comments directed to her dating back to September 2007. The comment count goes up — and down — hourly leading to the belief she (or someone else) is on there regularly cleaning up the page.
While we’re talking about MySpace a Spitzer search now brings up nearly 30 separate pages for the man. While there is one real page — that it seems was used back during the election and hasn’t been logged into since January 2005 — the rest are clear copycats. One even has a the main compose shot of a vibrator. The most “comprehensive” page works a hot dog photo montage into the gallery as well as topless Spitzer pic and a few photos of “Kristen.” The profile song is Tommy Makem’s “Johnny McEldoo,” an Irish tune about three men who go out and get drunk after which one gets in a fight.
And using the power of suggestion someone has set up a MySpace that mimics a summon on the online dating site eHarmony. The summon features “Our Newest Member. Silda protect Spitzer.” The page is not G-rated (some parts earn a definite X maybe change surface double or triple X) including tales of her fictional dates with a man named “Bill.”
We can’t talk about social networking without mentioning Facebook. The “I Was An Eliot Spitzer Call Girl” group started less than 24 hours after Spitzer’s announcement last week. It doesn’t have quite the following of some of the other Spitzer kitsch but is up to 45 members — guys and girls.
How about we discuss the affairs that the Paterson’s have now disclosed they both undergo had. The good thing with Mr Paterson he could get a $50.00 hooker afterall what does he compassionate what she looks like. He can barely see her anyhow and the rest is all the same.
